E Michael (Mike) Gorman is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work (SSW) at San José State University (SJSU), part of the College of the Applied Sciences & the Arts (SASA). He holds a Ph.D. in medical anthropology from the University of Chicago, an MPH in epidemiology from UC Berkeley, and an MSW from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention, substance abuse in LGBTQ+ communities, and global social work initiatives. He has been a three-time Fulbright Scholar (Tunisia 2005, Jordan/Oman 2009, Argentina 2012) and received the 2006 Scholar of the Year award from SASA for his work on drug use.
Dr. Gorman teaches policy and research courses in the MSW program and has developed international coursework, including an Argentina-focused program from 2006–2011 and plans for a Spain initiative in 2014. His scholarly work includes over 30 conference presentations, NIH-funded research (R01 grant), and editorial roles at multiple health journals. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to addressing health disparities and human rights issues in marginalized populations.
