The University of Texas Medical Branch at GalvestonAbout
Dr. Miguel Pappolla is Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas Medical Branch and member of the Mitchell Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. Board-certified in neurology, neuropathology, and pain medicine, his research focuses on Alzheimer's disease mechanisms and novel therapeutics.
His investigations target oxidative stress pathways, amyloid processing, and metabolic dysfunction in neurodegeneration. Current work explores cholesterol metabolism links to Alzheimer's pathology and melatonin-based interventions for neuroprotection and pain management.
Recent publications demonstrate three key themes: 1) Metabolic biomarker discovery for early Alzheimer's diagnosis, 2) Re-evaluation of antioxidant therapeutic approaches, and 3) Neuromodulatory applications of melatonin in chronic pain conditions. His articles frequently integrate molecular pathology with clinical translation.
Awards:
- Zenith Fellowship (Alzheimer's Association)
- Shannon Director's Award (NIH)
- Weil Award in Neuropathology
- Josephine T. Morse Professorship
Dr. Pappolla leads NIH-funded projects on DNA damage repair in neurodegeneration and mentors graduate students in translational neuroscience. His laboratory employs metabolomic and proteomic approaches to investigate therapeutic targets.
