About
Professor Miguel A. Valvano holds appointments in the Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine at Queen's University Belfast, with expertise in molecular microbiology and infectious diseases. His research program investigates:
- Molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative pathogens
- Lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis and modification
- Intracellular survival strategies of Burkholderia and Enterobacter species
- Host-pathogen interactions in immunocompromised hosts
His laboratory develops novel genetic tools for manipulating difficult bacterial pathogens and explores therapeutic approaches targeting bacterial membrane structures. Recent publications examine bacterial persistence in macrophages, polymyxin resistance mechanisms, and phage therapy interactions.
Honors include fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology, multiple Canada Research Chairs, and recognition for postgraduate supervision excellence. He leads international collaborations and mentors numerous doctoral candidates in microbiology and immunology.
