Mickaella Perina

Mickaella Perina is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Boston, within the College of Liberal Arts. Her work bridges philosophy with law, focusing on the intersections of race, citizenship, and memory in postcolonial contexts.

• Education: PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toulouse II (France), 1996

Research Interests: Perina examines how historical legacies of slavery and colonialism shape contemporary citizenship and human rights frameworks. Her scholarship engages with liberal democratic theory, Caribbean philosophy, and the geopolitics of globality, particularly how racial categorizations influence political belonging and institutional practices. She also explores the ethical dimensions of memory laws and structural injustice in transnational contexts.

Recent Publications: Her works include analyses of creolization in citizenship contracts, critiques of human rights frameworks, and studies of memory in postcolonial states. These contributions highlight interdisciplinary connections between philosophy, history, and legal studies.

Program Leadership: She directs the Philosophy and Law program of study and teaches courses on philosophy of law, justice, and contemporary moral issues.
