Michelle Nowlin is a Clinical Professor of Law at Duke Law School and Co-Director of the Environmental Law and Policy Clinic. She holds a J.D./M.A. dual degree from Duke University (1992) and teaches courses including Environmental Law, Food and Agricultural Law, and supervises clinic students from both Law and Environmental programs. Her research bridges environmental policy, marine conservation, and sustainable food systems.
Professor Nowlin's recent scholarship focuses on innovative solutions to marine debris pollution, drone applications in conservation, and policy frameworks for sustainable fisheries. Her 2018-2022 publications demonstrate strong thematic consistency in coastal protection and environmental governance, with emerging work on technology-enabled conservation methods.
Honors include:
- Duke Faculty Award for Outstanding Leadership in Sustainability (2013)
- Bill Holman Award for Environmental Advocacy (1997)
- Honorary Warden by NC Audubon Society (2006)
She chairs the Duke Campus Farm advisory board and serves on multiple university committees including Bass Connections Faculty Advisory Council. Her clinic has achieved precedent-setting environmental protections including safeguards for endangered sea turtles and lead poisoning prevention measures.
