Michelle Gilley

Michelle Gilley, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Biology and Dean of the Division of Natural, Mathematical, and Health Sciences at Mars Hill University. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Auburn University and has over 20 years of college-level teaching experience. Her academic career spans roles at the University of Tennessee – Martin, Auburn University, and the University of North Carolina – Wilmington before joining Mars Hill University in 2015.

Dr. Gilley’s research focuses on animal communication, behavior, and conservation of endangered species, particularly bats and flying squirrels. Her work includes studying ultrasonic vocalizations, habitat use, and survey techniques for endangered species in the eastern U.S. She owns the environmental consulting firm Borealis Biological, which collaborates with government and private agencies on conservation strategies.

Her recent publications highlight trends in bioacoustics, endangered species management, and field research methodologies. Topics include vocal repertoires of flying squirrels, habitat use of northern flying squirrels, and mist-net configurations for bat surveys. These studies span disciplines like ecology, chiropterology, and mammalogy.

Dr. Gilley actively mentors undergraduate students in research and internships related to animal behavior and conservation. She co-owns Borealis Biological, which implements best practices for endangered species conservation. At Mars Hill University, she teaches courses in human anatomy and physiology, comparative vertebrate anatomy, mammalogy, and animal behavior.
