Michele Brown, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She serves as the founding program director of the Healthcare Simulation Master's program. Her roles include teaching simulation design, advanced debriefing, patient safety, communication, and teamwork. She holds appointments across multiple UAB schools, including the School of Health Professions and School of Nursing.
Dr. Brown earned a PhD in Public Health Education from UAB (2017), an MS in Clinical Laboratory Science (2005), and a BS in Clinical Laboratory Science (1998) from Auburn University. She is certified as a Specialist Blood Bank (SBB) and Medical Technologist (MLS) through ASCP, and holds a CHSE certification in Healthcare Simulation.
Her research focuses on interprofessional simulation to improve healthcare teamwork and patient safety, behavioral factors influencing provider decision-making, and advancing medical laboratory science and transfusion medicine. Notable contributions include developing simulation-based curricula for interprofessional education and disaster preparedness.
Her work has been recognized through prestigious awards: President's Award for Excellence in Teaching (UAB) and Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship. She is also a distinguished recipient of the American Society for Clinical Pathology's '40 under 40' award in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Dr. Brown has led numerous simulation initiatives including tabletop exercises for disaster management, opioid use disorder awareness training, and 'Stop the Bleed' programs. She collaborates across disciplines to integrate simulation into healthcare education and policy, emphasizing real-world application of theoretical concepts.
Her lab focuses on advancing healthcare simulation standards through curriculum development and evidence-based practices. Current projects explore virtual reality applications in medical emergencies and interdisciplinary training for complex healthcare scenarios.
