Michelle A. Barnello

Dr. Michelle Barnello is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Christopher Newport University. She served as Chair of the department from 2014 to 2020 and has been a faculty member since 2001, previously holding an Assistant Professor position at Old Dominion University.

• Education: Ph.D. (2000) and MA (1998) in Political Science from State University of New York at Binghamton; BA (1996) in Political Science from Le Moyne College.

Her research focuses on women and politics, particularly examining the impact of women legislators on state politics through roll call voting behavior, bill sponsorship, and abortion policy analysis. She has published in journals such as State Politics & Policy Quarterly and Legislative Studies Quarterly.

Dr. Barnello is the founding member of Alpha Alpha Epsilon–Christopher Newport’s chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, and served as its advisor for fifteen years.
