Michel Fortmann is a Lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Université de Montréal. He has taught strategic studies and international relations history since 1980. He founded the military and strategic studies program in 1986, leading to the creation of the CEPSI (Centre d'études pour la paix et la sécurité internationale), which he directed until 2012. His research focuses on arms control, nuclear strategy, and the history of warfare.
Research affiliations include CÉRIUM (Centre d'études et de recherches internationales). He has supervised over 50 students since 1989, covering topics like targeted killings in Israel-Palestine, military innovation in Algeria, and Arctic security. A major research project (2009–2013) explored globalization's impact on regional security, funded by the FRQSC.
His academic leadership includes co-directing interdisciplinary teams on international treaties, foreign policy, and military alliances. Teaching and research emphasize historical analysis of conflict, strategic decision-making, and security institutions.
