Michaela Rankin is a Professor of Accounting and Deputy Dean (International) at Monash Business School, Monash University. She holds a PhD in Commerce from RMIT University and has over two decades of academic experience, complemented by prior work as a public practice accountant. Her research focuses on corporate governance, executive compensation, board gender diversity, and integrated reporting, with a particular emphasis on applying legitimacy theory to corporate social responsibility reporting in Australia.
Michaela has received multiple teaching awards, including from the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She leads international immersive programs for students and is actively involved in editorial roles for journals like the Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal and Meditari Accountancy Research. Her community service includes roles with CPA Australia’s Environment, Society and Governance Centre; the Australian Business Deans Council; and various non-profits such as the Australian Books for Children of Africa.
Her research outputs span 21 articles, textbooks, and reviews, with recent works addressing assessment integrity in education and equity compensation’s role in corporate governance. Key projects include studies on integrated reporting utility and CEO appointment impacts on firm performance.
