Michael Wise

Associate Professor Michael Wise holds a joint appointment in The University of Western Australia's School of Physics, Maths and Computing (Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering). He completed a double degree in Engineering and Arts, followed by a PhD in Electrical Engineering at UNSW. His career includes roles at University of Technology Sydney and University of Sydney, before shifting to bioinformatics research. Since 2004, he has focused on microbial informatics, computational biology, and research ethics. Current projects emphasize applying computational methods to understand microbial life.

Research Interests: Prof. Wise specializes in microbial informatics, particularly bacterial genomics and bioinformatics. His work integrates computational techniques with evolutionary biology and public health, addressing topics like antibiotic resistance, pathogen virulence, and environmental microbial ecosystems. Recent projects include analyzing Neisseria gonorrhoeae lineages and Helicobacter pylori epidemiology in WA.

Teaching & Grants: He lectures in Computer Science and has supervised 8 HDR students. His grants include funding for microbial bioinformatics projects. Recent articles focus on RNA structure prediction, 3D point cloud analysis, and metagenomic studies.

Labs & Teams: Active in interdisciplinary teams combining computer science and microbiology, collaborating globally on genomic epidemiology and computational biology initiatives.
