About
Professor Michael Weekes is a Principal Investigator at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR) and a Professor of Viral Immunology affiliated with the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on understanding how intracellular pathogens, particularly human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and monkeypox virus (MPXV), evade host immune responses through proteomic interactions with antiviral proteins.
Research Interests
Weekes investigates viral immunology and host-pathogen interactions, with emphasis on proteomics to dissect viral mechanisms of immune evasion. Key areas include antiviral protein inhibition, structural and computational biology of viral complexes, and therapeutic strategies targeting viral-host interactions.
Funding & Collaborations
His work is supported by the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, UK mpox consortium, and the Evelyn Trust. Collaborative efforts include partnerships with Professors David Rubinsztein, Evan Reid, Gillian Griffiths, and Julian Rayner.
