Michael W. Konstan, MD is the Gertrude Lee Chandler Tucker Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Dean for Translational Research at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Pediatrics and leads the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative as Principal Investigator of an NIH NCATS CTSA grant. He is also the Austin Ricci Chair in Pediatric Pulmonary Care and Research at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
Education: BA and MD from Case Western Reserve University (1978, 1982), Pediatric residency at The Children’s Hospital of Buffalo (1983–1985), and Pediatric Pulmonology fellowship at University Hospitals of Cleveland (1985–1988).
Research focuses on cystic fibrosis (CF), including clinical trials of novel therapies and lung inflammation management. His seminal work established high-dose ibuprofen as the first recommended CF anti-inflammatory treatment. He has led over 200 peer-reviewed publications and serves on advisory boards for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, NIH, FDA, and pharmaceutical firms.
Industry affiliations include consulting roles with Aradigm, Axcan-Pharma, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Novartis, and Vertex (as of 2016). Awards include the School of Medicine’s highest honor and recognition in Best Doctors in America.
Leadership roles: Founded the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutic Development Network, chairs the CF Foundation Research Executive Committee, and serves on the Northern Ohio Chapter Board. He reviews for top journals like NEJM, Lancet, and JAMA.
