About
Michael W. Hess, PhD, serves as Associate Professor of Cell Biology at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Medical University of Innsbruck. His laboratory leads the Cellular Electron Microscopy working group, focusing on ultrastructural analysis of membrane trafficking mechanisms in intracellular signaling, degradation pathways, and cellular polarity using advanced cryo-based imaging techniques.
His research spans critical domains:
- Membrane Trafficking & Endosomal Signaling Pathways
- Cellular Polarity Mechanisms in Epithelial Systems
- Host-Pathogen Interactions (Salmonella Defense)
- Genetic Basis of Microvillus Inclusion Disease
- Methodological Innovation in Electron Microscopy
Analysis of his 2006-2014 publications reveals three dominant research trajectories: (1) Molecular characterization of the p14/MP1 complex in endosomal signaling and cell migration, (2) Genetic dissection of microvillus inclusion disease through MYO5B and Syntaxin 3 mutations affecting intestinal polarity, and (3) Technical advancements in cryo-immunoelectron microscopy for 3D cell culture systems. His work consistently bridges fundamental cell biological mechanisms with clinical implications in gastrointestinal disorders.
Hess directs a collaborative research unit comprising University Assistant Georg F. Vogel and technicians Karin Gutleben and Barbara Witting. Their laboratory employs cryo-(immuno)electron microscopy and tomography across diverse biological models including mammalian cell cultures, human biopsies, mice, yeast, flatworms, and Hydra to investigate membrane dynamics in health and disease.
