Michael Vahey

Michael Vahey is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, part of the McKelvey School of Engineering. He affiliates with the Center for Science and Engineering of Living Systems and the Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences. His research focuses on imaging methods and microfluidic technologies to study infectious diseases, particularly how viruses like influenza navigate and replicate in host systems. Vahey holds a PhD (2010) and MS (2006) from MIT, and a BS (2004) from Carnegie Mellon University.

Research Interests: Combining imaging and microfluidics to understand pathogen-host interactions, with emphasis on viral dynamics and replication mechanisms. Recent work includes studies on influenza A virus behavior and cellular condensate pH measurement in collaboration with the Center for Biomolecular Condensates.

Lab & Outreach: The Vahey Lab develops educational materials for K-12 via summer programs and investigates viral protein roles in infection spread. Collaborations include Rohit Pappu’s lab for biomolecular condensate research.
