Michael Thomson

Professor Michael Thomson holds dual appointments as Professor of Law at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Professor of Health Law at the University of Leeds. He joined UTS’s Faculty of Law in January 2020 and co-directs the Centre for Law & Social Justice. His research focuses on health law, children’s rights, and legal theory, particularly exploring the intersections of embodiment, social justice, and legal responsibility. He has published extensively on topics such as health inequalities, non-therapeutic genital cutting, and the role of law in addressing systemic injustices. Professor Thomson has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Sydney, Cornell University, and Emory University.

Education: LLB from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Law from the University of Birmingham. He teaches Health Care Law and Theories of Social Justice. His funded research includes a Wellcome Trust grant on conscientious objection in public life. He actively contributes to academic leadership, serving as Director of Research & Innovation and collaborating with global networks in law and health policy.

Research interests span legal determinants of health, epigenetics and social justice, and the ethical dimensions of medical practices. His work emphasizes bodily integrity, children’s rights, and the legal frameworks shaping healthcare access and equity.
