Michael T. Heath is the Fulton Watson Copp Chair Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He directs both the Computational Science and Engineering Program and the Center for Simulation of Advanced Rockets, and previously served as Interim Department Head (2007-2009). He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Kentucky, an M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Before joining UIUC in 1991, he worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
His research focuses on numerical analysis (particularly numerical linear algebra and optimization) and parallel computing. His scholarly contributions include authoring the textbook Scientific Computing: An Introductory Survey and editing major journals including SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing and SIAM Review.
