Dr Michael Stewart is an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at the University of Queensland, specializing in Late Antiquity and early Medieval history with a focus on culture, gender, and identity. He holds a PhD from the University of Queensland (2013) and an MA from San Diego State University (2003).
His research examines themes of masculinity, military virtue, and imperial identity in Byzantine and post-Roman contexts, particularly through the works of Procopius of Caesarea. Notable projects include editing a volume on Justinian's Gothic Wars and analyzing the role of eunuch commanders in early Byzantine military structures.
Dr Stewart has taught courses such as HIST2615 (Age of Crusades) and HIST1400 (Medieval World) at UQ. His recent publications include Masculinity, Identity, and Power Politics in the Age of Justinian (2020) and contributions to volumes on Byzantine identity and military leadership.
His work bridges historiography and cultural analysis, exploring how concepts like Romanitas persisted through crises like the Plague of Justinian. He regularly presents at international conferences and contributes peer reviews for journals such as Journal of Late Antiquity and Byzantina Symmeikta.
