Michael Snediker

Michael Snediker is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Houston, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. His scholarship and teaching focus on 19th- and 20th-century American literature, queer theory, disability studies, and poetics.

• Education: Ph.D. in American Literature, Johns Hopkins University (2005); M.A. in American Literature, Johns Hopkins University (2003); M.Phil. in American Literature, University of Cambridge (2000); B.A. (summa cum laude with highest honors), Williams College (1998).

Research Interests include queer optimism, affect theory, disability aesthetics, and transcendentalist influences in American literature. His work explores intersections of chronic pain, queer embodiment, and poetic form.

Selected Recent Publications span queer theory, disability studies, and literary criticism. Topics include:

• Queer planetary aesthetics in Elizabeth Bishop's work.
• Chronic pain's role in 19th-century American literature.
• Queer philology and phenomenology.

Scientific Awards include Lambda Finalist for Best Gay Poetry, Fordham University Press Poets Out Loud Prize, and multiple Yaddo fellowships.

Honors & Teaching highlight his Lence Teaching Award Finalist designation (2018) and courses on American Romanticism, queer literature, and poetics of attention.
