Michael Small is CSIRO-UWA Chair of Complex Systems and Professor in the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing at the University of Western Australia, where he also directs the UWA Data Institute. His research develops analytical frameworks for complex systems across biological, engineering, and social domains using time series analysis and network modeling.
Research Focus: Applies complex systems approaches to diverse domains including animal behavior modeling, energy infrastructure optimization, and mental health systems. Current projects include TSuNAMi (Time Series Network Animal Modelling) and the ARC Training Centre for Transforming Maintenance through Data Science.
Leadership: Directs multiple cross-disciplinary initiatives including the ARC Research Hub for Transforming Energy Infrastructure through Digital Engineering and projects building culturally safe mental health systems for Indigenous Australians.
