Michael Skilton is a Professor of Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Health and the Maurice Blackmore Principal Research Fellow in Integrative Medicine at the University of Sydney. He leads the Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Disease research group at the Boden Institute and the Nutrition and Cardiovascular Health Project Node at the Charles Perkins Centre. Skilton holds dual appointments in the Central Clinical School and the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
He earned a BSc (Hons) from the University of Queensland (1998) and a PhD in cardiovascular nutrition from the University of Sydney (2005). His postdoctoral work spanned Lyon, France (2005–2007) and the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute (2007–2010).
Research focuses on the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), precision nutrition strategies to prevent cardiometabolic disorders, and vascular health across lifespans. Key areas include early-life risk prediction for cardiovascular disease, mechanisms linking obesity to cardiovascular risk, and interventions targeting Indigenous Australian populations.
Skilton has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals like Lancet, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. He is an Associate Editor of Journal of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease. Major grants exceed $4M, with collaborations in Australia and internationally.
Awards include the 2018 Sir Zelman Cowen Prize for Discovery in Medical Research. He is active in professional societies such as the American Heart Association and the Australian Atherosclerosis Society.
