Dr. Michael Schwan is an Assistant Professor of Macro-finance and Sustainability at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Economics and Business, Department of Global Economics & Management. His research focuses on political economy, banking systems, corporate governance, and sustainability challenges such as inequality and digitalization. He explores institutional transformations in political economies, particularly state-market relations, public debt management, and crises.
Dr. Schwan serves on the supervisory boards of Koelnmesse GmbH and Sparkasse KölnBonn, and collaborates with transform! europe for alternative economic dialogue. His recent projects include analyzing emergency credit programs during the pandemic, European corporate governance trends, and digital transformation impacts on industrial firms.
Research highlights include studies on financialization of public debt in Europe, resilience of German savings banks, and regional financialization dynamics in the EU. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing economic inequality and sustainable finance.
