About
Michael Röckner is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Bielefeld since 1994, with previous positions at Purdue University (2005-2009), University of Bonn (1990-1994), and University of Edinburgh (1986-1990). He is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Science and Literature, Mainz, and an honorary member of the Romanian Academy.
Education:
- Doctorate degree (1984), Bielefeld University
- Habilitation (1987), Bielefeld University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Cornell University (1984-1985)
Research Focus: Professor Röckner's work centers on Probability theory, Potential theory, Partial differential equations, Spectral theory, and Mathematical physics, with particular emphasis on stochastic analysis. His research has fundamentally advanced the understanding of stochastic differential equations and their applications across mathematical physics and real-world modeling.
Publication Trends: His recent publications (2015-2019) demonstrate continued leadership in stochastic partial differential equations, stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equations. These works represent cutting-edge research at the intersection of probability theory, functional analysis, and mathematical physics, showing remarkable consistency in quality and impact throughout his career.
Scientific Recognition:
- Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy (2018)
- Distinguished Visiting Professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences (2017)
- Honorary Doctorate from University of Swansea (2017)
- Max-Planck Research Prize for Stochastic Analysis (1992)
- Sir Edmund Whittaker Memorial Prize (1989)
- Heinz-Mayer-Leibnitz Prize (1989)
Academic Leadership: Professor Röckner has supervised 30 doctoral students and held significant leadership positions including President of the German Mathematical Society (2017-2018), Dean of the Bielefeld Mathematics Faculty for 11 years, and Speaker of CRC 1283 "Taming uncertainty and profiting from randomness" since 2017. He previously led the Beijing-Bielefeld IRTG 1132 "Stochastics and Real World Models" (2006-2014) and served on the ERC panel for Mathematics Advanced Grants (2008-2018).
Research Centers: As Speaker of CRC 1283 funded by the German Research Foundation, Professor Röckner leads a major collaborative research center addressing fundamental challenges in analysis and stochastics related to uncertainty and randomness. This initiative brings together mathematicians from multiple institutions to develop new theoretical frameworks with potential applications across scientific disciplines.
