About
Prof. Dr. Michael Pfaffl is an Adjunct Professor of Molecular Physiology at the Department of Animal Physiology and Immunology, TUM School of Life Sciences, Technical University of Munich. His research focuses on endocrine and paracrine regulation, extracellular vesicles, and nucleic acid-based biomarkers for health and animal welfare. He completed his studies in Agricultural and Animal Sciences (1993) and Biotechnology (1996) at TUM Weihenstephan, followed by a PhD (1997) and habilitation in physiology (2003).
Research emphasizes innovations in biomarker development using extracellular vesicles and RNA analysis. Key contributions include the REST software tool for real-time PCR analysis and co-authoring the MIQE guidelines for PCR experiments. Awards include the TUM Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Medal (2019) and recognition as Best PhD Supervisor (2018).
Publications span biomarker validation, vesicle-mediated signaling, and methodological standards in molecular diagnostics. Active in editorial and advisory roles for journals and international research initiatives like ISEV position papers on extracellular vesicle analysis.
