Michael Peek

Professor Michael Peek is a leading academic in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sydney. He holds multiple roles including Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sydney Medical School, Associate Dean and Head of School at Sydney Medical School Nepean, and Director of the Charles Perkins Centre Nepean. He also serves as Head of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Nepean Hospital and a member of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Board.

His education includes a BSc (Med)(Hons), MBBS, PhD, and several honorifics such as FRANZCOG, FRCOG, DDU, and CMFM. His research focuses on maternal-fetal health with specific interests in managing high-risk pregnancies and chronic medical conditions during pregnancy. Key areas include gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertension, asthma in pregnancy, and obesity-related complications. He leads the Australasian Maternity Outcomes Surveillance System (AMOSS) and collaborates on the Breathing for Life Trial, a randomized controlled trial addressing asthma management during pregnancy. Professor Peek also works with First Nations populations to address rheumatic heart disease in pregnancy and obesity-related health disparities.

His research integrates clinical and translational approaches, often involving large-scale surveillance systems and international collaborations. He has pioneered studies on fetal thymus development in pre-eclampsia and is advancing AI-driven ultrasound analysis for rapid clinical data extraction through partnerships with the Faculty of Engineering.

Professor Peek actively contributes to policy development through AMOSS findings, directs high-risk maternity outreach programs in rural NSW, and advises via the NSW Perinatal Advice Line. His work emphasizes improving maternity care safety and quality across Australia and New Zealand.
