University of Southern CaliforniaAbout
Michael N. Neely, MD, is a Professor of Pediatrics (Clinical Scholar) and Division Chief of Infectious Diseases at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. He holds board certifications in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases and serves as co-Director of the Laboratory of Applied Pharmacokinetics and Bioinformatics.
Dr. Neely completed a Master’s of Science in Clinical and Biomedical Investigations at USC in 2010. His research focuses on pediatric clinical pharmacometrics, including:
- Population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling
- Antiviral, antiretroviral, and antifungal therapy optimization
- Pharmacogenomics and therapeutic drug monitoring
- Bayesian approaches to clinical trial design
Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate Dr. Neely's focus on antimicrobial pharmacokinetics in critical care and immunocompromised populations. Key themes include:
- Novel methods for therapeutic drug monitoring (e.g., vancomycin AUC estimation)
- Optimization of antifungal/antibiotic regimens (isavuconazole, meropenem, colistin)
- Mechanistic studies of drug penetration in special compartments (CNS, epithelial lining fluid)
- Computational pharmacometrics and algorithm development for precision dosing
Dr. Neely maintains continuous NIH funding, operates an HIV therapeutic drug management service at LAC+USC Medical Center, and provides international consultations on dose individualization. He serves on the FDA Anti-infective Drug Advisory Committee and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across USC, JPL, and global institutions to advance pharmacometric applications in clinical practice.
