Emeritus Professor Michael McDaniel AO is a Wiradjuri elder and distinguished academic leader in Indigenous education. He currently serves as Special Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Priorities) at UTS, previously holding roles as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Leadership and Engagement) and Director of the Jumbunna Institute. A veteran of the Australian Defence Force (1980-1986), he holds a BA from Western Sydney University and a PhD from UTS.
His leadership has positioned UTS as a global leader in Indigenous higher education, achieving record enrollment and retention rates. He champions initiatives like Australia’s first National First Nations College and the Indigenous Graduate Attribute policy ensuring all UTS graduates engage with Indigenous knowledge systems. Awards include NAIDOC Scholar of the Year (2019) and AO (2021) for contributions to education, reconciliation, and the arts.
McDaniel’s service spans federal/state roles including Chair of AIATSIS, NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal member, Sydney Opera House Trust Chair, and former Bangarra Dance Theatre Board Chair. His research integrates Indigenous knowledge with modern educational frameworks.
