Dr. Michael Lipset is a Faculty Lecturer in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) at McGill University's Faculty of Education. His work bridges critical pedagogy, educational technology, and arts-based learning to advance social justice and equity in schools. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Studies from McGill (2021), an Ed.M. in Arts in Education from Harvard, and a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Lipset’s research focuses on critical arts pedagogies, hip-hop education, and transformative learning, with a particular emphasis on culturally sustaining practices and pushout reengagement. He co-directs 4 Learning, an international nonprofit promoting recording arts in education, and leads the development of the Arts, Media & Entertainment World within STEMuli’s Metaverse of Learning. His podcast RecordED Arts explores intersections of digital production and equitable learning.
He has collaborated with institutions like Spotify, Twitch, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, producing resources such as Sound Practice modules (streamed 10,800+ times globally). His book Hip Hop Genius 2.0 (2022) reimagines high school education through creative arts. Awards include the FRQSC Scholarship and McGill’s Educator-Practitioner Award.
Dr. Lipset advises Master’s students in DISE and has pioneered initiatives like student-run record labels to incentivize attendance. His work emphasizes leveraging technology thoughtfully, whether to foster social action or promote digital disconnection as pedagogy.
