About
Michael L Sweet is a Research Scientist at the Institute for Geophysics within the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin, serving as Program Co-Director of the industry-supported UT Gulf Basin Depositional Synthesis Project (GBDS). This initiative synthesizes well, seismic, and geological data to reconstruct the basin-scale depositional history of the Gulf of Mexico.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. from the University of Illinois, and a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on Cenozoic depositional systems with emphasis on clastic sedimentology and marine geology, particularly sediment routing between shallow marine and deep-water environments, subsurface fluid dynamics, and stratigraphic controls on reservoir connectivity.
Recent publications analyze Quaternary sediment transport in the Mediterranean and Eocene deep-water systems in the Pacific Northwest, revealing critical insights into submarine fan growth rates, depositional architecture, and source-to-sink processes. His work demonstrates consistent methodological rigor in quantifying sediment flux and stratigraphic evolution across diverse basin settings.
Dr. Sweet actively mentors undergraduate researchers including Jacob Margoshes and John Cabrales, while leading the GBDS consortium that facilitates industry-academic collaboration. His professional service includes presidency of the Gulf Coast Section of SEPM (2021–2022), AAPG Bulletin editorship (2013–2016), and GeoGulf 2021 Technical Program Committee leadership.
