Professor Michael Klein of the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University is a leading scholar in Music Theory, with a focus on critical theory, musical narrative, and posthumanism in music. He previously held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Austin, SUNY Buffalo, Indiana University, and Princeton University.

Klein’s research applies critical theory and psychoanalysis to musical interpretation, with a particular interest in Chopin’s narrative structures, Debussy’s temporal organization, and Lutosławski’s formal innovations. His recent projects explore soundtrack theory and posthumanist perspectives in music.

Klein has advised graduate and undergraduate courses in musical semiotics, sonata theory, and Freudian traditions in music. He serves as Associate Editor for 19th-Century Music and has lectured internationally on topics like Lacanian insights into musical meaning and narrative excess.
