Michael J. LaMonte is a Research Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health at the University at Buffalo's School of Public Health and Health Professions. He serves as Director of Graduate Studies for MS and PhD programs. His research focuses on physical activity measurement, functional capacity, and their roles in cardiovascular disease epidemiology and healthy aging. Previously, he held roles including Director of Epidemiologic Research at the Cooper Institute and Assistant Professor positions in Cardiology and Exercise Science.
Education:
- BS in Physical Education/Athletic Training (Canisius College, 1990)
- MS in Physical Education (Marshall University, 1992)
- PhD in Exercise Physiology (University of Utah, 1997)
- MPH in Epidemiology (University of South Carolina, 2000)
Research Interests: Physical activity measurement methodologies, sedentary behavior patterns, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and their intersections with aging and chronic disease prevention. His work emphasizes translational research linking physiological mechanisms to population-level health outcomes.
Key Findings: Recent studies highlight associations between accelerometer-measured physical activity, sedentary behavior, and mortality in cancer survivors, as well as the roles of IL-6 signaling and clonal hematopoiesis in cardiovascular outcomes. His research also explores how lifestyle factors like PPI use and dietary patterns influence hypertension and CVD risk.
Awards:
- Fellow, American College of Sports Medicine
- Fellow, American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention
His work contributes to national surveillance systems for CVD and informs public health strategies to optimize physical activity guidelines for older adults.
