Michael Hughes is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) and Head of the ANU Sydney Clinical School. He is a surgical oncologist with over 30 years of experience specializing in melanoma, breast cancer, sarcoma, and soft tissue tumors. He previously served as Head of the Clinical School at the Sydney Adventist Hospital and as Clinical Director of Surgical Services there (2019–2023). He chairs the Breast and Surgical Oncology multidisciplinary teams at Sydney Adventist Hospital and leads Northern Surgical Oncology, a practice with six surgeons.
Education: MBBS First Class Honours (University of Sydney, 1989), FRACS General Surgery (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, 1997).
Research focuses on surgical oncology, particularly breast cancer biomarkers, lymphedema management, and re-irradiation techniques. Recent publications address diagnostic concordance in HER-2 receptor testing, subclinical lymphedema surveillance, and case studies challenging radiation therapy protocols.
