Michael Hoeflich is the John H. & John M. Kane Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law. He holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge University and J.D. from Yale Law School. His career includes deanships at Syracuse University College of Law (1988-94) and KU Law (1994-2000). Active in legal history, ethics, and comparative law, Hoeflich has authored over 115 articles and 15 books. Notable works include Legal Publishing in Antebellum America (2010) and Roman Law and Forensic Oratory in Antebellum America (2003). He leads a $1.5M Intelligence Community grant and directs KU's Homeland Security: Law & Policy program.
Research interests span legal history, professional ethics, and comparative law, with a focus on 18th–19th century legal practices. Awards include the Higuchi-KU Endowment Research Achievement Award (2021) and honorary LL.D. from Baker University (2003). Hoeflich's scholarship bridges historical methodologies and modern legal challenges, emphasizing archival research and interdisciplinary approaches.
His recent work explores legal publishing trends, judicial ethics, and the cultural history of law practice. He has advised on intellectual property rights in undergraduate research and contributes to Law & History Review and Roman Legal Tradition.
