About
Michael Hayward is a full-time Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Somerville College. His research focuses on designing novel solid-state materials with unconventional electronic and magnetic properties through low-temperature synthetic methods.
- Education:
- D.Phil., University of Oxford (supervised by Prof. M. J. Rosseinsky)
Research Interests revolve around three key areas: (1) Developing soft chemical routes for metastable oxide and oxide-hydride materials via topochemical reduction, (2) Engineering 'hybrid-improper' ferroelectric phases through anion/cation manipulation in perovskite structures, and (3) Creating earth-abundant Li-ion cathode materials using kinetically controlled reactions to enable sustainable energy storage. His work bridges fundamental inorganic chemistry with applied materials science.
Scientific Recognition:
- Meldola Prize (2002)
Professional Affiliations: Current Tutorial Fellow at Somerville College; previously held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) at Merton College (2002-2004). Conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University under Prof. R. J. Cava.
