About
Michael Grunstein, PhD, was a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA. He was a pioneering scientist in chromatin and epigenetics, known for his foundational work on histones' roles in gene regulation. Born in Romania and educated at McGill University (B.Sc.) and the University of Edinburgh (PhD), he joined UCLA in 1975. His research shifted from sea urchins to yeast, revealing histones' regulatory functions. He chaired the Biological Chemistry Department from 2007–2010 and retired in 2016. Grunstein received numerous accolades, including the Lasker Award, and was a devoted mentor. Beyond science, he maintained an expansive garden. He passed away in 2024 after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, survived by his wife Judy, children, and grandchildren.
