Michael Green

Dr. Michael Green is a Professor in the Department of Humanities and Department of Medicine Division of General Internal Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. He joined the faculty in 1996 and holds affiliations with Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and Penn State Cancer Institute. His roles include Chair of the Hershey Medical Center’s Ethics Committee, Director of the Program in Bioethics, and primary care physician.

• Education: MD and MS from University of Illinois (1983–1988), BS from University of Illinois (1979–1983). Fellowship in General Internal Medicine and Bioethics (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Clinical Medical Ethics Fellowship (University of Chicago), and Residency in Internal Medicine (Northwestern University).

Research Interests: Focuses on decision-making at end-of-life, bioethics, and communication. Co-created the decision aid “Making Your Wishes Known” to improve patient-spokesperson concordance. A pioneer in Graphic Medicine, using comics for medical education and patient engagement. Authored works on medical professionalism and communication.

Recent Grants/Projects: Includes NIH-funded studies on spokesperson decision-making (2012–2021), melatonin effects on vestibulosympathetic reflex (2007–2010), and breast cancer genetic testing education (1999–2001).

• Key Awards: 2023 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2020 Outstanding Collaborative Research Team.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Program in Bioethics and collaborates extensively with Dr. Benjamin Levi on decision-making research. Involves teams in Graphic Medicine education and ethics committee operations.
