Michael Gleason serves as Associate Professor of Classics & Comparative Literature at Millsaps College, where he has taught foundational courses on Homer, Virgil, and Beowulf to first-year students since 1994.
He earned his BA (1982), MA (1991), and PhD (1994) in Comparative Literature from Brown University, establishing expertise spanning three millennia of literary traditions.
His research centers on Classical and Medieval Literature with deep specialization in Greek and Roman epic, lyric poetry, and drama. He explores Classical and Medieval Mythology through Western Civilization frameworks while maintaining active instruction in Latin and Greek language pedagogy at all proficiency levels. His scholarly perspective bridges ancient texts with modern literary interpretation.
Recent publications reveal consistent focus on classical reception in modern literature, particularly through James Joyce's intertextual techniques and mythological adaptations. His work extends to American literary giants like Faulkner and Hawthorne while examining Indigenous conceptual frameworks and Irish fictional traditions, demonstrating comparative methodology across temporal and cultural boundaries.
