Professor Michael Given is a Professor of Landscape Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. His academic journey began with a PhD in Cypriot archaeology from the University of Cambridge (1992), followed by research fellowships in Jerusalem, Nicosia, and Glasgow. He holds leadership roles in multiple projects, including Co-Director of the Glencoe Archaeological Project and Director of the Troodos Archaeological and Environmental Survey Project in Cyprus (2000–2014). His research focuses on landscape archaeology, colonialism, and the interaction between humans and the environment, particularly in Cyprus and Scotland. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Scotland, and Turkey.
Dr. Given's work emphasizes 'conviviality' as a conceptual framework to understand human-non-human interdependence. He has authored/co-authored influential books like The Archaeology of the Colonized (2004) and Landscape and Interaction (2013, 2013 Vol. 2). His research also explores post-medieval Scottish landscapes and community archaeology. He has supervised over 15 PhD students, contributing to diverse topics such as Cyprus’s Bronze Age settlements, Highland fishing communities, and seaweed industry heritage.
His grants include AHRC funding for Scotland’s seaweed industry study (£85,356) and leadership in the Council for British Research in the Levant. He has held editorial roles for journals like Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology and Journal of Islamic Archaeology. His teaching spans courses on Mediterranean archaeology, historical landscapes, and material culture.
