Michael Gasper

Michael Gasper is an Associate Professor of History at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. He specializes in the History of the Modern Middle East and North Africa, Ottoman Empire, and the History of Islam and the Muslim World.

He has authored two books: The Power of Representation: Publics, Peasants and Islam in Egypt (2009) and Is there a Middle East: The Evolution of a Geo-Political Concept (2011). His current research focuses on identitarianism, state sovereignty, and the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).

Academic Appointments: Appointed in 2009 at Occidental College.

Education: B.A. from Temple University; M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University.
