About
Michael Fogle Jr. is the Howard Earl and Carolyn Taylor Carr Professor of Physics at Auburn University's Department of Physics. He has held progressively senior positions since 2008, including Professor (2023–present), Associate Professor (2015–2023), and Assistant Professor (2008–2015). His research focuses on experimental atomic and molecular physics in plasma environments, CubeSat satellite systems, and quantum communication technologies. He leads the Auburn University Small Satellite Program (AUSSP), developing CubeSats for NSF-funded terrestrial gamma-ray studies and Air Force quantum key distribution projects.
Education: PhD (Stockholm University, 2004), Licentiate (2002), MS & BS (East Carolina University, 2000 & 1997).
Research interests include electron-driven processes in astrophysical plasmas (ionization, recombination, excitation) and terrestrial applications. He has authored impactful studies like the 2003 Astronomy & Astrophysics paper on Ni XVIII plasma recombination.
Teaching: Undergraduate laboratory courses, introductory physics, Modern Physics, and CubeSat-focused special topics.
- Honors: 2020–2025 endowed professorship, 2017 teaching award, 2015 robotics award
- Grants: NSF CubeSat project, Air Force quantum communication initiative
- Labs/Teams: Director of AUSSP, SPARC Collaboration member
