About
Michael E. Tschakovsky is a Professor at Queen's University, cross-appointed to the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences. He holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc from the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on cardiovascular physiology, oxygen delivery in exercise, and neurovascular health. He leads the Human Vascular Control Lab, emphasizing integrative approaches to study cardiovascular regulation in health and disease.
Education:
- PhD (University of Waterloo)
- MSc (University of Waterloo)
- BSc (University of Waterloo)
Research Interests: Dr. Tschakovsky investigates mechanisms of oxygen delivery to active muscles during exercise, impairments in patient populations (e.g., type 2 diabetes, peripheral artery disease), and the role of exercise in improving brain health and cerebrovascular function. His lab explores how exercise training and dietary nitrate impact cardiovascular efficiency and cognitive performance in older adults.
Grants & Funding: He currently holds a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant (2011-2016) and an NSERC Research Tools and Instruments Grant (2011). These support his interdisciplinary work bridging basic and biomedical research.
Labs & Collaborations: The Human Vascular Control Lab collaborates with the Centre for Neuroscience Studies to study exercise-induced brain plasticity. The lab trains up to 4 graduate students annually, emphasizing hands-on research in cardiovascular physiology and translational medicine.
