Michael Dowling is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology and Neurotherapeutics at UT Southwestern, specializing in pediatric stroke, neurovascular disorders, and neurological complications of sickle cell disease. He completed his A.B. at Harvard College, M.D./Ph.D. at Columbia University, and clinical training at UT Southwestern. Dowling created one of the largest pediatric stroke clinical/research programs in the US, establishing both Pediatric Stroke Clinic (2003) and Pediatric Acute Stroke Team (2004).
His research examines stroke in children and sickle cell disease neurology. As an active member of the International Pediatric Stroke Study, he has enrolled over 450 patients across 65 international centers. Dowling also maintains research interest in ethical issues in neurology, serving on ethics committees and developing educational innovations exploring care of neurologically devastated children.
Dowling's publications focus on pediatric stroke outcomes, neurovascular disorders, and sickle cell neurology. Recent articles investigate socioeconomic determinants of stroke outcomes, cardiac arrest neurology, and dyslipidemia in childhood stroke. His clinical research consistently addresses health disparities and outcome optimization in pediatric cerebrovascular disease.
