Michael D. Johnson

Michael D. Johnson is an Astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) and a Lecturer in the Harvard Department of Astronomy, with additional affiliation as an inaugural member of the Harvard Black Hole Initiative.

His research specializes in imaging the universe's most compact objects—black holes and neutron stars—using extreme-resolution radio telescopes. As a co-leader of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, he pioneered techniques that produced humanity's first direct image of a black hole. Current work includes developing the Black Hole Explorer (BHEX) mission to extend EHT capabilities into space for detecting photon rings, alongside studies of pulsars, interstellar scattering effects, and active galactic nuclei through advanced interferometric methods.

Johnson actively collaborates with international teams on observational campaigns at facilities like the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and Arecibo Observatory, driving innovation in high-angular-resolution astrophysics.
