About
Michael Coleman is a Professor at Aston Pharmacy School, part of the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University. He leads the Pharmacology & Translational Neuroscience Research Group (PTNRG), focusing on neurotoxicity assays, drug development, and mechanisms of disease. His academic career spans over four decades, including roles as Senior Lecturer (2003-2006) and Lecturer (1991-2003) in Toxicology at Aston University, and a Wellcome Fellowship at the University of Liverpool (1989-91).
Education:
- PhD in Pharmacology (1982-85), University of Liverpool
- BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, First Class (1979-82), University of Liverpool
- Doctor of Science (D.Sc.), Aston University (2005)
Research Focus:
Design of in vitro neurotoxicity models using human cells/tissues, toxicological mechanisms of drug adverse effects (e.g., dapsone), methemoglobin formation, and molecular mechanisms of diabetic complications. His work emphasizes antioxidant therapies and alternative non-animal testing methods.
Publications Trends: Recent articles address neuroinflammation, SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, and dietary interventions for diabetes. He frequently explores toxic effects of pharmaceuticals and environmental agents using in vitro systems.
Awards:
- 2007: Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine
Advising & Grants: Supervised 7 research projects, including a doctoral thesis on materials science (1971). Active in securing funding for neurotoxicity and drug safety research.
Labs/Teams: Directs the PTNRG group, collaborating internationally on toxicology and CNS modeling. Engages in multidisciplinary projects linking pharmacology, toxicology, and regenerative medicine.
