About
Michael Cardwell is Professor of Agricultural Law at the School of Law, University of Leeds, where he has been a faculty member since 1990 after working in legal practice with Burges Salmon in Bristol.
His research expertise spans:
- Agricultural Law
- Common Agricultural Policy reform
- Agriculture in international trade frameworks
- GMO regulation and environmental law
Cardwell's scholarly work demonstrates an evolution from early research on agricultural tenancies and quota regimes to broader analyses of agricultural policy systems. His co-edited 2010 volume on GMO regulation represents a significant contribution to understanding the complex interplay between science, law, and policy across different jurisdictions. His publications consistently address how legal frameworks navigate tensions between innovation in agricultural production and societal concerns about food safety, environmental protection, and international trade obligations.
His major works include Milk Quotas: European Community and United Kingdom Law (1996), The European Model of Agriculture (2004), and co-editing The Regulation of Genetically Modified Organisms: Comparative Approaches (2010) with Luc Bodiguel, for which he wrote the introduction.
