Michael Buckley

Michael Buckley is a Reader in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester. He leads the ancient biomolecules laboratories and pioneered the ZooMS method for species identification using mass spectrometry. His research focuses on ancient proteins and DNA to study human impacts on biodiversity and vertebrate evolution. He holds a Royal Society University Research Fellowship (2013-2018) and collaborates with institutions like Creswell Crags Heritage Centre.

Education: PhD in Biology (University of York, 2008), NERC-funded postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Manchester. Specializes in bone biochemistry and high-throughput ZooMS applications.

Research interests include collagen fingerprinting, palaeoproteomics, and species identification in archaeological contexts. Recent work examines Neanderthal genetics, sea turtle foraging behavior, and Upper Palaeolithic lithic industries.
