About
Michael Berkowitz is a Professor of Modern Jewish History at University College London's Department of Hebrew & Jewish Studies. His work spans historical research, public engagement, and interdisciplinary projects. He holds a BA from Hobart College, an MA and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied under George L. Mosse.
Research interests include Jews and photography in Britain, Theresienstadt Ghetto theatre, minority boxers in Britain, and the Armenian genocide. He has curated exhibitions at UCL's Art Museum and the Wiener Library, advised on the Jewish Museum's 'Ghetto Warriors' exhibition, and developed award-winning historical apps with UCL Computer Science students.
Berkowitz has held fellowships at institutions like the Remarque Institute (NYU), USHMM, and Yad Vashem. Recent grants include the Science History Institute's Cain Fellowship (2022) and the Linda Hall Library Fellowship (2024).
