Michael Beggs

Dr. Michael Beggs is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. His research focuses on the history of economic policy, monetary theory, and socialist policy frameworks. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and has authored books such as Remaking Monetary Policy in China and Inflation and the Making of Macroeconomic Policy. His current projects include a book on market socialism and workplace democracy under contract with Verso, and studies on colonial monetary history in New South Wales.

His research interests span the history of monetary policy (19th–21st century), Australian capitalism, inflation dynamics, workplace democracy, and socialist policy alternatives. He has supervised research projects on topics including the history of economic policy in Australia and Japan, labour movements, and markets versus socialism.

Beggs has published widely in journals like Journal of Australian Political Economy and Labour History, and his work often critiques neoliberal economic frameworks. He has also contributed to media outlets such as The Monthly and ABC Rear Vision, discussing topics like inflation and central banking.
