Professor Michael Ashfold holds the position of Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bristol's School of Chemistry since 1992. His roles include Head of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry (1995–1997, 2002–2011) and EPSRC Senior Research Fellow (1997–2002). He has also served as Visiting Fellow at the University of Colorado's JILA (1990) and held visiting positions at institutions globally.
His research focuses on molecular spectroscopy, plasma diagnostics for diamond CVD, and pulsed laser ablation techniques. Key contributions include over 420 peer-reviewed publications and supervising over 50 PhD students. Awards include the Royal Society Fellowship (2009), APS Herbert P. Broida Prize (2015), and leadership roles in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Faraday Division (President, 2009–2012).
Current leadership includes chairing the RSC Science Education and Industry Board and serving on the EPSRC £4.5M Programme Grant. He advises prestigious institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry and Cambridge's Department of Chemistry.
