About
Professor Michael Ardern-Jones is Professor of Dermatology at the University of Southampton. Holding qualifications including BSc, MBBS, MRCP, DPhil, and FRCP, he leads an active research programme focusing on skin immunology, atopic dermatitis, drug hypersensitivity, and the development of wearable sensor technologies for dermatology.
Research interests
- Cutaneous immunology and T-cell responses in skin disease
- Epigenetic regulation of keratinocytes in atopic dermatitis
- Drug-induced cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions
- Non-invasive wearable devices for objective monitoring of atopic dermatitis severity
- Spatial transcriptomics and molecular phenotyping of inflammatory skin disorders
His recent publications demonstrate a translational approach: analysing large-scale registry data (A*STAR cohort), exploring genetic interactions in alopecia, and co-authoring international consensus statements on managing ocular side-effects of dupilumab. A strong collaborative thread links dermatology with biomedical engineering, yielding novel skin hydration sensors and conference abstracts on flexible electronic systems.
Active research funding currently includes grants from Pfizer Inc., the British Skin Foundation, and Aair Charity, supporting projects ranging from epigenetic profiling of atopic dermatitis to minimally-invasive diagnostic tools.
Doctoral supervision is provided to students across disciplines; current PhD researchers include Alexandar Todorov (Electronics & Computer Science) and Styliani Mavrova (Infection, Inflammation & Immunology), illustrating his cross-faculty collaborative ethos.
